Blackout tattoos in Panama

Solid black worked across large areas of the body — arms, legs, torso or a full bodysuit. It is one of the styles the studio is known for.

Where the studio came from

Subleink was built around blackout. Macabreink, the artist behind the studio, founded it with one goal: bring blackout and blackwork tattooing to a level rarely seen in Panama. He was the first in Panama to combine solid blackout with abstract lettering designs and clean artistic finishing. That mix of coverage, speed and artistic detail is why clients who know this art form seek him out specifically.

What is a blackout tattoo?

A blackout tattoo is a large area of skin saturated in solid black ink, with no outline and no shading inside it. Rather than drawing a figure onto the skin, the artist fills the area edge to edge and leaves chosen parts of the skin untouched — the black becomes the background and the bare skin becomes the drawing. It is normally worked on full sleeves, legs, backs, torsos and full bodysuits.

It is the most extreme form of blackwork. The difficulty is not in the drawing: it is in laying black evenly across a large surface so the area heals as one flat, solid tone, without patches, grey zones or lines where one pass met the next.

Blackout, blackwork and cover-up: the difference

  • Blackwork is any tattoo made only in black ink, including line, pattern and ornamental work.
  • Blackout is the version where black fills the whole area, with no gaps left except the ones designed into it.
  • Blackout cover-up uses that same saturation to bury an older tattoo underneath, which is one of the few reliable ways to cover heavy, dark work.

How blackout is done at Subleink

A full sleeve in one session of around 3 hours

A full arm, wrist to shoulder, is tattooed in a single session of roughly 3 hours. A full leg takes longer — up to about 7 hours, depending on the design and the finishing work. You do not come back three or four times for the same piece: you walk in with bare skin and walk out with the piece done. Bodysuits and projects spanning several body areas are the exception and are planned across sessions, with healing time in between.

Working in one sitting is not only about convenience. Black laid in one continuous session heals as one tone. When a large area is split across appointments weeks apart, the sections settle differently and the joins can stay visible.

Drawn freehand, directly on the body

There is no stencil and no design printed in advance. Macabreink draws the piece straight onto your skin, following your anatomy, so the composition sits where your muscle and bone actually are. The consequence is that no two pieces are the same and none can be repeated on someone else.

Topical anaesthetic for those who want it

Three hours of continuous saturation is demanding, and tolerance varies from person to person. For anyone who prefers it, the studio works with topical anaesthetic so the full session can be completed in one go instead of being cut short. It is optional — plenty of clients go through the session without it. If you have any allergy to anaesthetics or to tattoo inks, say so before booking.

Saturation is what decides the result

The visible difference between a blackout that looks solid years later and one that turns grey and patchy is saturation technique: machine, needle configuration, and how many passes a given area of skin can take before it is overworked. There are four saturation methods, and each body area needs a different one — the skin on a forearm does not take ink the way the skin behind a knee does. Macabreink teaches all four for free in the blackout guide.

Negative space and abstract lettering: the studio’s signature

Plain blackout covers. What Macabreink does is use the black as a surface to compose on. Shapes of untouched skin are left inside the solid area, and abstract lettering is built into those gaps, so what you read at a distance is a solid black limb and what you see up close is a composition.

That combination — solid coverage, negative space and abstract lettering, finished cleanly — is what the studio is known for in Panama, and it is the reason the work is recognisable without a signature. See it on the artist’s page and in the lettering work.

Who a blackout tattoo is for

  • Anyone who wants one large, uncompromising piece rather than a collection of small ones.
  • Anyone looking to cover old tattoos they no longer relate to, including dark or heavily saturated work that lighter cover-ups cannot hide.
  • Anyone building a bodysuit or a multi-area project over months.
  • Anyone who wants the piece finished in one sitting rather than spread over months of appointments.

It is less suited to anyone who wants fine detail, colour or small, delicate imagery — the studio does that work too, but it is not blackout.

What to know before committing

It is close to permanent

Blackout is one of the hardest styles to reverse. Laser removal on a fully saturated area is slow, expensive and rarely complete, and covering it with another tattoo means working on top of solid black. Treat it as a decision for life. We talk it through before anything starts, and nobody gets tattooed on the same day they first ask about it.

Healing takes longer than a normal tattoo

A saturated area is a larger wound than a line tattoo of the same size, so it weeps more in the first days and takes longer to settle. Sun exposure during healing is what most often ruins the final tone. You get the full aftercare instructions at the studio, and a healing check afterwards.

Frequently asked

What is a blackout tattoo?

A blackout tattoo is a large area of skin saturated in solid black ink, with no outline and no shading inside it. The black becomes the background and the untouched skin becomes the drawing. It is normally worked on full sleeves, legs, backs, torsos and full bodysuits.

How many sessions does a blackout tattoo take?

At Subleink a full arm is done in a single session of around 3 hours, and a full leg in one session of up to about 7 hours, with no repeat sittings for the same piece. Only bodysuits and projects spanning several body areas are planned across more than one session, with healing time in between.

How much does a blackout tattoo cost?

A full arm blackout is a closed price: $600 to $1,000, done in one session. A full leg is $2,000. Bodysuits and projects across several areas are quoted individually, from $2,000 up. Smaller pieces are charged from $250 per hour.

Does a blackout tattoo hurt?

Saturating a large area for three hours straight is demanding, and tolerance varies from person to person. For anyone who prefers it, the studio works with topical anaesthetic so the full session can be completed in one go. It is optional. Tell us beforehand about any allergy to anaesthetics or tattoo inks.

Can a blackout tattoo be removed later?

Not easily. Laser removal on a fully saturated area is slow, expensive and rarely complete, and covering it means tattooing on top of solid black. We treat it as a lifelong decision and talk it through before starting.

Does blackout work to cover an old tattoo?

Yes, that is one of its best uses. The saturation buries dark or heavily worked tattoos that a lighter cover-up cannot hide. Send a photo of the current tattoo and we will tell you what is possible.

How long does a blackout tattoo take to heal?

A saturated area is a larger wound than a line tattoo of the same size, so it weeps more in the first days and takes longer to settle than a normal tattoo. Sun exposure during healing is what most often ruins the final tone. You get the full aftercare instructions at the studio and a healing check afterwards.
