Dark lettering & freehand

Dark letterforms drawn by hand, straight onto the skin. It is the house signature and what most people come to us for.

What is dark abstract lettering?

Dark abstract lettering is a tattoo style where the letters are treated as shapes first and as text second. The words are still there, but they are stretched, overlapped, broken and rebuilt until the piece reads as a composition from across a room and only resolves into language when you stand close. It is done in solid black, at large scale, and built around the body rather than placed on top of it.

Abstract lettering vs traditional lettering

  • Traditional lettering — script, gothic, blackletter — is built to be read instantly. The typeface is chosen first and the body area second.
  • Abstract lettering inverts that. The body area is read first, and the letterforms are invented to fit it. Legibility is deliberately slowed down.
  • Which one you want depends on who the tattoo is for. If a stranger should be able to read the word, you want traditional. If the word is for you, abstract gives you something that works as an image for everyone else.

How lettering is done at Subleink

Freehand, with no stencil

There is no catalogue typeface and no design printed in advance. The artist draws the piece directly on your skin with a marker, following the muscle and the way the area moves. That is why two people who ask for the same word never walk out with the same tattoo — and why a piece designed for your forearm could not be transferred to someone else’s.

It is built to work at two distances

A good abstract piece has to survive being seen from three metres away, where nobody reads anything and only the shape registers, and from thirty centimetres, where the text appears. Most of the drawing time goes into making both of those true at once: the negative space between strokes is composed as carefully as the strokes themselves.

Lettering inside a blackout

The studio’s signature is the two combined. Shapes of untouched skin are left inside a solid black area and the lettering is built into those gaps, so the black is the background and the words are the light. If that is what you are after, start on the blackout page — the session, the price and the healing all work differently there.

Freehand is also how cover-ups get solved

An old tattoo constrains where ink can go. Drawing on the body lets the artist route the composition around what is already there instead of fighting it, which is often the difference between a cover-up that looks deliberate and one that looks like a patch.

What to bring to the consultation

Four things are enough for the artist to come back with a real proposal: the text, what it means to you, the body area, and a rough size. You do not need reference images or a font in mind — the letterforms are the artist’s part of the job.

What does help: telling us whether the word should be readable to other people or not. That single answer changes the whole design.

What to know before committing

You are not approving a drawing beforehand

Freehand means the piece takes its final form on your skin, on the day. You approve the marker drawing before any needle touches you, and nothing starts until you are happy with it — but there is no printed design to sign off weeks in advance. If that uncertainty is not for you, say so and we will work differently.

Fine black lines age

Thin strokes spread slightly over the years, which is normal for all black line work. Letter spacing and stroke weight are planned with that in mind, which is part of why very small abstract lettering is usually a bad idea.

Frequently asked

What is dark abstract lettering?

Dark abstract lettering is a tattoo style where the letters are treated as shapes first and as text second. The words are stretched, overlapped and rebuilt until the piece reads as a composition from a distance and only resolves into language up close. It is done in solid black, at large scale, and built around the body.

What is freehand lettering?

Lettering drawn by hand directly on the skin with a marker, without a stencil, so the design follows the shape of your body instead of sitting flat on top of it. You approve that drawing before any needle starts.

What is the difference between abstract and traditional lettering?

Traditional lettering — script, gothic, blackletter — is built to be read instantly: the typeface is chosen first and the body area second. Abstract lettering inverts that: the body area is read first and the letterforms are invented to fit it, so legibility is deliberately slowed down.

Can I ask for a specific word or phrase?

Yes. You bring the text, what it means to you, the body area and a rough size. The artist decides how it looks — letterforms, scale and how it sits on the area. Telling us whether the word should be readable to other people changes the whole design, so say so.

Can I see the design before the session?

Not as a printed drawing. Freehand means the piece takes its final form on your skin on the day. You approve the marker drawing before any needle touches you and nothing starts until you are happy with it, but there is no design to sign off weeks in advance.

How much does lettering cost?

Small lettering starts at $100. Larger pieces are charged from $250 per hour. Lettering combined with blackout follows the blackout pricing: a full arm is a closed $600 to $1,000 in one session, a full leg $2,000.

Does lettering work over an old tattoo?

Often yes. Drawing freehand lets the artist route the composition around what is already on the skin instead of fighting it. For heavy or very dark old work, blackout is usually the more reliable cover. Send a photo and we will tell you what is possible.

★★★★★
